Check this out!
Back to school shopping can be overwhelming. There are tons of stores and clothes to choose from and if you have a limit on how much you can spend, you may end up leaving out an important piece of clothing that you will need later on. So I have compiled a list on what every girl should have in her wardrobe. This is based on the budget of a middleclass person.
Chapter 1- Shopping
Section 1- What you need
4-5 pairs of jeans:
1 pair of dark wash
1 pair of light wash
I suggest having at least one pair of skinny jeans and pair of flare
1 special pair (colored, ripped, or embellished jeans) -optional
2-3 pairs of pants:
1 pair of black dress pants
1 pair of herringbone dress pants -optional
1 pair of khaki/white pants
20-40 shirts:
I suggest at least one in the following colors (red, light blue, pink, yellow, purple, dark blue, dark green, light green, white, black, brown, grey, and orange)
Try to have a good variety of types such as 3 long/flowy tops, 10 well-fitting tees, 4 cardigans , 1 blouse, 2 fun tees =20
*Sleevelengths depend on the weather where you live
Sweatshirts:
I would try to have a variety of colors and styles. The rule normally is you should have a jacket that matches each shirt. Like a white zip-up may match 6 different tops. Sweatshirts should not be overly big and bulky and should have long enough sleeves to go past the wrist. Try not to buy too many pull-overs until you have basic zip-ups covered.
Shorts/skirts**:
1 pair of jean shorts
1 patterned pair of shorts
1 jean skirt
1 fancier skirt
1 flowy/casual skirt
Dresses**:
One casual flowy dress
One dress that can be worn over jeans/leggings
(**-In addition to fancier clothes and church wear)
Outerwear:
One coat to wear to school/nicer places such as a peacoat or bomber in a neutral color (blcak, grey, white)
One snow/ski jacket depending on where you live
1
1-2 blazers in neutral colors that can be worn casual and dressier*
*thanks to xsm for this suggestion
Shoes:
1 pair of brown, black, and silver shoes that are comfortable to wear more frequently
1 pair of comfortable snow boots (Uggs, Juicy Couture makes nice ones)
1 pair of cute, fashionable sneakers
1 pair of athletic sneakers for gym/excersising
1 pair of flip-flops
1 pair of heels or dress shoes- optional
1 pair of random cute shoes (patterned flats/ patent heels)-optional
Purses:
1 designer bag in a neutral color for maximum use (Coach/Dooney/Juicy)
1 clutch or wristlet for when a big bag is unnesessary
1 fashionable bag in any color or design
Undergarments:
1 strapless bra in a neutral color
2 neutral colored bras (beige/tan/white*)
1 sports bra -optional
1 funky fun bra -optional
For underwear make you have neutrals for light pants and that most do not create embarassing panty-lines!
*white bras can show up under clothes sometimes- (tan is always best)
Jewelry:
I can't really tell you for sure what you should have but make it a nice mix of silver and golds as well as stones. You should have a good variety of funky (cocktail rings/bangles) and more serious pieces (gold, nice stones, ect.)
Chapter 1 Shopping
Section 2- 15 Tips while shopping
Whe you go to a mall, outlet, or even a small boutique the large quanity of clothing in different colors and textures can be intimadating to some, this section will explain how to get what you want and need quickly and as least expensive as possible.
1: Avoid Hollister, Abercrombie, Aeropostale, and other stores that are fequently shopped at by your peers. In order to be admired for your style you need to stand out from the rest of the crowd
2: Try an outlet. Outlets can be found in many places and consist of a bunch of popular stores all together with often times reduced prices. Going to an outlet is quick (all the stores are walking distance from each other) and cheap. Outlets are also a good place to buy investment pieces, like a designer bag, because many places like Coach sell bags that may not have been sold everywhere at 25-50% off. Outlets are also a good alternative beacause they carry less common items of clothing so you don't have the same outfit as someone else.
3: Travel to another mall. While your mall may be closer, taking an extra hour or so to a different mall is always good. As malls carry different stores at different places, a visit to a new mall can refresh your style and make you more open to new designs and stores
4: Everyone likes to stay up on the new trends, but by buying some of these you can spend a lot of money on something you may only wear a couple times. I suggest buying trendier items at cheaper chain stores that mimick popular trends and styles. While your shoes may not be the real $500 dollar Marc jacobs, the idea and style can be expressed in a
cheaper shoe, bag, or other item of clothing.
5: Go shopping alone or with a parent only. Bringing along a sibling or friend may sound like fun while back-to-school shopping but it is not. if you shop without friends or siblings you will be guaranteed to get a first pick, more time with less distractions to shop, and may even be able to spend more.
6: Try new stores. Stores that may look weird, cheap, not your style, or even too expensive can be great ones sometimes to shop at. Try going into a store you normally would ignore as you pass by- you could be right about it...or pleasantly suprised.
7: Think of the fit. A style of shirt that may look fabulous on your friend, may make your hips look too wide or make you look not-so-hot. A shirt should be tight enough to show your body, yet loose enough to move around in and look modest.
8: Mange your money. After you have purchased what you need for school (see chapter1, section1) is when you can buy the coach bag or chanel sunglasses. This can also help you budget while buying other items because you are trying to have a certain amount of money left. If your parents buy your clothes the same still applies. Because if you spend less on shirts won't they be more open to buying something expensive?
9: Look online.... By looking at stores' websites you can get an idea of what items they have as well as prices. By choosing or getting an idea of what you want from certain stores can make shopping quicker and more
convenient.
10. ......but don't buy online. A shirt that may look fabulous on the skinny model online may end up making you look frumpy. Because many sizes also vary, it is hard for a shirt ordered online to fit exactly how you like. If you absoulutely love a shirt, look for it in a store. If they don't have your color you can always order it online because you have your size.
11. It doesn't quite fit... If a article of clothing doesn't fit (Ex: The jeans are just one size to big) and the store does not have the next size up or down you can order it online. As long as you can guesstimate your size by looking at the fit of a different size, it can be very convienent. Many stores also are able to order you a different size to come to your house, recommend a store that has that size in stock, or have another store ship over the size to their store. This also works with different colors that are out of stock.
12. Look in magazines for items that you like. While you may not get the exact pair of heels, the style can help you while shopping because you have an idea of what you like. This is also a good way to determine which trends you like. The magazines I like best for style are: People Stylewatch, Instyle, Lucky, and TeenVogue.
13.Think of school. While you are shopping it is easy to be caught up in all the amazing outfits and forget that you will most likely never wear that to school. Because most schools are on the casual side, even a adorable super-trendy outfit may make you feel out-of-place and rediculous. Its okay to still stand out a little but you should still look like a normal middle schooler or high schooler.
14. Don't just think about school style-wise, but also take into consideration the wearablility of clothing. Even though the patent four inch heels may look great on you, walking from class-to-class and up and down stairs make make them not so great. An oversized bag can also have bad consequences as it takes up a lot of room near desks and can make juggling three textbooks and a binder even more difficult.
15. And finally just be confident while shopping. Having a negative additude while shopping can affect the way you feel about your clothes. Keep a smile on and be open to new styles, stores, and ideas while still remaining realalistic. And most importantly have fun! It is shopping after all!
Chapter 1- Shopping
Section 3- Making a memorable first day outfit
When starting a new school year your outfit should draw attention to yourself and express your taste in clothing, but shouldn't be a greatoutfit. Because most people are scattered about and are too absorbed with their schedules and getting from class to class, a great outfit can be left unnoticed by most. So why waste time and effort with the best outfit you can put together? Normally I follow these rules below as guidelines for the first week of school (I did a whole week of outfits, however some people, like me, only have half a week.)
1st outfit: The first outfit should be a little more casual then you normally dress and more relaxed. Because everyone will be paying attention to themselves, a super trendy outfit that you could not wear for a while again is wasted. For the first day an outfit should consist of: Well structured jeans in a regular color and style; a statement bag or accesory that is the key piece to the outfit; a plain colored tee shirt, cardigan,or blouse; comfortable cute flat-heeled shoes, and an easy hairstyle. This creates a casual, classy, and comfortable look for the first day that makes a statement but doesn't over do it. Wearing a dress, skirt, dress pants or anything else dressy on the first week (unless required) is not to be done. It can look like you are trying too hard and have a response like "why is she all dressed up for school?" when the response should be "wow she looks confident and has great taste." I have two examples listed below. and yes I do recognize that some items are american eagle but it is hard to find exactly what you are looking for on polyvore. This is not a perfect back to school outfit but more like a guideline for you to add a little bit of your own personal taste to.
2nd, 3rd, and 4th outfits- The middle of the week should still be casual and effortless while leading up to your own personal style by adding more trendy pieces and using different textures and shapes of clothes. Around the fourth day is when statement pieces such as colored jeans can be introduced. This is an adjusment period and can get people used to your style slowly and get to know you better without fashion as an influence.
Last day of first week outfit- This is the outfit that should be stressed the most. The last day outfit should make people anxious for the next week to start to see what you will wear next. Let your style really shine through on this day. Don't go overly crazy however, the first week of school is not one for you to experiment new fashion ideas on.
And thats it! Just add some confidence and a smile and let your outfit complement you... and let people get to know you first.
Chapter 2- Beauty
Section 1- What makeup you need
When going back to school people want to look their best, not only outfit wise but in general. Makeup used in descreet portions can enhance your natural beauty such as radiant skin or dazzling eyes. In order to have the best makeup look possible every girl should have the following items at home for use.
* Foundation (liquid or mousse) in a color as close to your skin color as possible
* Concealer in your skin's color-optional
* Powder blush in a pink for lighter skin tones and brown for darker ones
* Neutral color eyeshadow (white, brown, beige, ect.)
* Eyeliner in black or brown (If you have longer, fuller lashes brown is best)
* Eyeshadow or liner in other colors and metallics-optional
* A good mascara in black or brown (perferred black) *Note- if you don't normally wear mascara due to longer eyelashes, like me, try a funkier slightly colored version. Navy looks great on blue eyes*
* A eyebrow pencil that matches your hair in case of an unfortunate tweezing or waxing incident -optional
* Under eye concealer *Note foundation can also be used
* Lipgloss in a wide variety of colors (lighter colors for paler skin tones leading up to darker ones)
* Lipstick or lip stain to put under gloss on some occasions-optional
* A wide variety of brushes (buying seperate ones instead of ones from sets is always best)
* Makeup pads to apply foundations and concealers
It is always best to have a wide variety of makeup choices at home although you should never wear them at once. What most girls (okay complection, needs a little oomph to excentuate features) should wear on a daily basis (and have in their makeup bag) is:
Foundation
A light color eyeshadow
Mascara
A little bit of eyeliner for some
A little blush
Lipgloss
Because I strongly disagree with girls wearing too much makeup I will make an grade-appropriate list of what you should wear at your age.
6th grade- A little concealer on bad skin problem spots, neutral colored eyeshadow, and lipgloss
7th grade- A little foundation or concealer for unwanted skin problems, mascara, colored eyeshadows (but nothing too bright-think pink), and lipgloss
8th grade- Foundation or concealer for unwanted skin problems, eyeliner if you feel is absolutely needed on top lid only, mascara, blush, lipgloss
9th grade- Foundation or concealer for unwanted skin problems, small amount of eyeliner only on top lid and end corner, mascara, blush, lipgloss, eyeshadow in almost any color (black in now acceptable)
10th grade and up- You should know what makeup you need by now and what you don't. This is where trying new styles is more acceptable.
I know many of you wear more makeup that I recommend for your age group but I think that makeup should only be worn if needed. The girl who has a bunch of foundation on, and tons of black eyeliner and mascara may seem cool but she is giving off a different vibe to people. Too much makeup can be a turn-off for a lot of guys especially as you get older and too much makeup can label a girl as insecure with her looks even if she is gorgeous. Less is always more, and a makeup should complement the beauty you already have.
Chapter 2- Beauty
Section 2- How to apply makeup
Ever see that girl who looks similar to the clown you saw at the circus when you were six? While it may amuse you at her exspense you could look the same way. And even though I'm sure most people know how to apply makeup here is a quick section as a friendly reminder on how to achieve your wanted makeup look. ![]()
How to do a perfect smokey eye every time:
First make sure your eye area is clean from all makeup and is dry (no water from face washing or contact saline solution.) Next take a black or brown eye penicl that writes easily and apply a small even linea across your top eyelid. If you make a small mistake it is okay and wont make a difference. Next apply either a brown or light black shadow to the top eyelid not filling the whole eyelid. Next smudge the shadow and some of the mess up eyeliner so it looks less done up. Now apply some more eyeliner to the bottom of your eye in the corner going to about where the colored part of your eye ends. Smudge this just a little. Add some black or brown mascara and you have yourself a smokey eye that is easy to do.
How to make a natural eye: Use a small amount of brown eyeliner on your top eyelid and smudge so it blends more into the eye. Next, add a medium brown color shadow on your full eyelid gently and not thick. After that take a light brown or tan shadow and smear it into the darker shadow and a little bit abopve your eyeshadow. Now smear your entire eye just slightly and your done!
How to pull off a funky eye: This look is only when you are wearing a fairly simple outfit with not too much going on. First take a liquid eyeliner in a funky color. I like bright pink and an electric blue. Then apply a thin even line (you can not smudge this!) on the entire top eyelid. Apply a little bit of black mascara and your done. It is pretty simple as long as you do not use extra liner or use shadow. Shadow can make the eye look more busy when just the liner makes for a dramatic yet still clean looking eye.
How to wear different color shadows at once: Make sure your eye is clean and eyeliner free. Then take one color that is a little bolder than the others and make a thin line on your top lid as close to the lash line as possible. Next, take another color and make a diagonal swipe up the corner of your eye almost to the end of the brow. Smear this line so it doesn't stick out that much. Now take another color and put it lightly over your whole eyelid, gently smearing it so it isn't too harsh. Finally take a light color and go a little above your eyelid. Add some mascara and black eyeliner in the corner of your bottom lid and your done! The look is a harsh look and I suggest it only for people who can pull of a lot of eyemakeup and color and are of an older age.
How to apply blush: Take a nice, not cheap brush and brush it back and forth in a natural looking blush. Pat the brush on the side of something like the side of the blush until you can't see the blush all that well. Now you take the brush and brush it lightly over your cheekbones. If any blush is noticeably dark gently pat the spot. If it does not come off or lighten try rubbing it slightly to blend it with the rest of your cheek.
How to apply liquid foundation: Take a makeup pad (or sponge) and put a small dot of foundation on it. Now take the dot and pat it over problem areas such as pimples, black heads, dark circles, acne scars, and where your skin is redder or uneven. Once most of the foundation dot is used up use the pad to blend it into the rest of your skin by going up and down instead of circles. Your skin should look even and clean. Avoid any clumpyness and if you are unsure of the color or way it is applied ask your mom, older sister, or friend. If your skin now looks like makeup is a little too obvious try a powder foundation over the liquid foundation. Use a brush (or if like for Neutrogena it comes as a brush) and make circular motions over skin that appears to obvious. use your fingers to smear any areas where the makeup accumulated a little too mcuh and then your done!
How to get the perfect lip: Start by putting a small smudge of lipstick, stain, or lip pencil (yes, lip pencil) on the lips. Once it is smudged take a slightly pink, brown, or red lipgloss and apply on your lips while you are smiling. After this is done pat your lips together and you are done! Its super-easy isn't it? Just reapply lipgloss every so often to mantain your color.
How to pull off a red lip: Take a nice red lipstick that is right for your skin shade. (Pinker reds for pale skin and darker reds for darker skin) Put the lipstick on your whole lip while carefully avoiding the corners. Next use your finger to smudge the lipdtick just a little around the corners and edges of your lip. Smack your lips together a few times and use a tissue to pat the lipstick if it is too thick. If you are going for a rougher, edgier look leave the lipstick matte. If you want a more polished look use a light coat of clear gloss over the lipgloss. Finally make sure your teeth are not stained with the lipstick and that your skin around your lips is red-free.
